A canção é do segundo álbum do PINK FLOYD, de 1968, "Saucerful of Secrets".

"Havia muita alegria nele".

NEWS - Four Non-Obvious Things Pink Floyd Can Teach Your Team (CIO Magazine)

The band which produced Dark Side of the Moon has a surprising number of lessons to teach about collaboration, team-building and management skills.

I recently read Mark Blake's Comfortably Numb: The Inside Story of Pink Floyd. It is, as I said in my 5-star Amazon review, a great book about the history of the band that created some of the top-selling albums of all time. At its most obvious level, this is a biography of creativity, innovation and business success. Blake quotes an early Pink Floyd manager as saying, "None of us imagined that decades later you could go to the remotest part of the globe and find cassettes of Dark Side of the Moon rattling around in the glove compartments of Third World taxis."

But without particularly trying to do so, the book also succeeds as a collaboration case study of a team of extremely creative people working together—and some of the points I drew from reading Comfortably Numb demonstrate that many of the "everyone knows" assumptions about team-building are myths. Or at least they can be.

(All this is particuarly poignant at the moment because, as you probably know, Syd Barrett died in 2006, and Richard Wright died this week. Given a long history of Pink Floyd fandom at the Schindler bitranch—my spouse first saw them play during the Meddle tour—we mourn the loss.)

Hiring Based on "Team Fit" is Over-Rated

The hiring process in any IT department (or, actually, any business environment at all) always puts a lot of emphasis on whether the new team member will "fit in" with the existing culture. While there's certainly value in that goal (because we all prefer to work with people we care about and understand), that attitude isn't always right.

As Eugene Nitzer wrote recently in 7 Agile Leadership Lessons for the Suits, teams often need someone to take on devil's advocate role to avoid complency, or to challenge assumptions that can get in the way of innovation. Or, as a successful businessman once told me, "When two partners agree all the time, one of them is unnecessary."

That is supremely evident from Pink Floyd's history. While most of them knew each other from childhood in Cambridge, and they moved in the same circles in their London youth (such as attending the same architecture college), they didn't necessarily like one another. In fact, their history is full of stories about the friction between these supremely talented, creative individuals, as well as their efforts to cope with the increasingly fractious leader, Syd Barrett, and the opinionated Roger Waters.

"I actually walked out of one of the first rehearsals," says Gilmour. "Roger had got so unbearably awful, in a way that I'd later get used to, that I stomped out of the room." . . .

"[Syd] was our friend, but most of the time we now wanted to strangle him," admitted Waters.

In some scenarios, you might consider those the antics of creative prima-donnas who can escape consequences because of their business value (and thus appear like "Eric" in Would You Fire This Person?). But at the time this anecdote took place, Pink Floyd was far from superstar status; their big hit was "See Emily Play," which had reached #5 on the UK pop charts.

But the team could focus, and for the movie soundtrack La Vallée, they recorded 10 songs in 14 days, despite a whistle-stop tour of Japan in the middle of it all. Says the book, "As Nick Mason would admit later, 'We had no scope for self-indulgence.'"

The lesson, though, is that to be a business success, "personality fit" isn't always a requirement—though obviously it sure helps. The ability to get the job done is what matters. Barrett was let go only after he made it clear he could no longer contribute to the team's success.

"Dark Side of the Moon contains the best songs the Floyd have ever written," Wright told writer Carol Clerk. "Even though I wasn't great friends with Roger, there was a great working relationship. To this day, I think it's sad we lost it."

Creative Teams Use Limitations and Frustrations to Greater Creative Purpose

The difference between effective teams where people don't necessarily get along and those that fall apart—or at least this team—is how the individuals turn their experiences (past and present) into the creative work. As the book says, "Interviewed in 2004, Waters revealed that the inspiration for 'Echoes' lyrics came from the sense of disconnection he experienced during his early years in London, and following Syd's turbulent departure from the band. . . Perversely, despite the icy distance that would develop between some of those writing and performing the music, the theme of communication, of reaching out, would be one the band would return to obsessively."

All artists use their own experiences as inspiration, of course, whether their art is expressed in software engineering or with a laser light show. But Pink Floyd songwriters transformed their shared painful experiences—not the least of which was references to Syd Barrett on Wish You Were Here—into art.

Expect Creative People To Push Themselves and Others—Sometimes Too Hard

Much of the friction in the post-Barrett Pink Floyd has been laid at the feet of Roger Waters. Yet, Waters demonstrated time and again that he assumed leaderership of the band because he must. Of his role change in 1969, Waters said, "I took responsibility in the Floyd because nobody else seemed to want to do it. I know I can be an oppressive personality because I bubble with ideas and schemes, and in a way it was easier for the others to go along with me."

Creative people aren't always compassionate in demanding the best of others. When Gilmour called Waters to ask for help with the lyrics to "The Narrow Way," Waters said, "Do it yourself" and hung up the phone. "Which was probably his way of helping me find my feet. It sort of makes me cringe now," Gilmour is quoted as saying.

Creative people can set the highest expectations for themselves. Dark Side engineer Alan Parsons, writes Blake, "quickly discovered that the band were rarely given to expressions of outright enthusiasm, even when things were going very well." Parsons explained, "After an amazing guitar solo, Roger would turn around and say something like, 'Oh, I think we might be able to get away with that one.'"

Don't Let the Technology Get in the Way

This last point is possibly a stretch, but one connection between technology teams and Pink Floyd is the distraction of the technology on which they ultimately rely. The band's mammoth sound and lighting equipment regularly overloaded the power source. The hardware, at times, overwhelmed the music and limited what the band could do. Especially when they had to get clearance for a floating pig. That ruined a lot of shows, and added extratension to the situation.

How much of this can you bring into your own life as manager or team member? I like to think that it's quite a bit. Teams that get along well, sometimes too well, can fail to challenge one another to scale new heights. I would like to think that encouraging each other to greater work can be achieved without soul-destroying results (and as a music fan I certainly would have preferred that the band didn't implode), but the assumption that "we all have to like one another" or "we all have to follow the designated leader's instructions" don't always contribute to the greater goal. When a team of creative people all buys into that goal, it's sometimes best to let them work on their own to achieve it.

The piper at the gates of dawn”.

Tema do Jornal Nacional

Veio “The dark side of the moon”, em 1973, o álbum mais cultuado do Pink Floyd, e com ele a popularidade e sucesso internacionais.

“Nosso relacionamento ficou completamente abalado durante as gravações de ‘The wall’. Roger acreditava ser a banda em si. Então, me mandaram embora.

Me trouxe memórias e me emocionou”.

Outros shows, outros encontros”.

Nota do blog

News - Morre Richard Wright, tecladista e fundador do Pink Floyd

O músico compôs e fez os vocais em algumas das principais canções do grupo, incluindo "The great gig in the sky" e "Us and them", do clássico "The dark side of the moon", de 1973.

NEWS - Gilmour says no Pink Floyd reunion

‘I’ve been there, I’ve done it,’ says the rocker

Former British Pink Floyd band member David Gilmour has no plays to reunited the band. He's having far too much fun on his own. But, if you go see him live, he will break out a Floyd tune.

LONDON - David Gilmour is sorry to disappoint, but there will be no Pink Floyd reunion. He’s having too much fun on his own.

The British rock icon raised fans’ hopes when the band performed at the Live 8 charity concert in London in 2005. It was the first time in almost a quarter of a century that Gilmour and estranged bandmate Roger Waters had appeared onstage together, and the atmosphere was electric.

But once was enough, Gilmour says.

NEWS - City Wakes - Official Tribute to Syd Barrett Info

The death of Pink Floyd founder and sixties icon Syd Barrett in July 2006 was greeted with great sadness all over the world. Though his star shone but briefly, Syd’s creativity continues to inspire generations of musicians; he perhaps more than any other artist sowed the seeds of the creative flowering that characterised the 60’s underground psychedelic movement.

The City Wakes will be the world’s first official tribute to Syd Barrett and will incorporate a series of multi-faceted events that are expected to generate considerable international interest.

Premiering in Syd’s hometown of Cambridge, before transferring to London, The City Wakes is an ambitious insight into Syd’s early life, organised by arts and mental health charity and professional production house Escape Artists, which will celebrate the creative mind of this fascinating figure.

The series of exciting events has the full support of Syd’s family and friends. Highlights will include:

* An exhibition of Syd Barrett paintings including many never seen before works, displayed alongside extremely rare Syd Barrett related memorabilia, original pieces from Pink Floyd’s legendary designer Storm Thorgerson, and archival photos from world-famous photographer Mick Rock.

* Concert performances presenting fresh interpretations of Syd’s greatest songs. Directed by award-winning musician and composer, Simon Gunton, the production will showcase specially-created video art and stunning Floyd-esque lighting displays and will culminate in a one-off gala performance of the concert.

* A new book of interviews and memorabilia, based on the memories and collections of Syd's friends and family. Focussing on Syd's early life and the exciting Cambridge cultural scene in which he was such key figure, the book includes interviews, photos, drawings and letters that have never been seen in print before.

* Special guided tours for fans of all the major Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd-related historic sites in Cambridge.

* Music workshops under the expert eye of The City Wakes Musical Director, Simon Gunton offering members of the public the opportunity to explore the surreal genius behind Syd’s wonderfully unorthodox music and lyrics.

* A recreation of a 1960s-style ‘happening’ – directed and hosted by a group of Syd’s former friends here.

* Storm Thorgerson’s first ever solo exhibition in Cambridge. Mind Over Matter: Images of Pink Floyd will contain photographs of over 60 of Storm’s Pink Floyd/Syd Barrett related works.

The City Wakes tribute to Syd Barrett is supported by his friends and family. Friends of Syd’s who are contributing to the project include Pink Floyd’s long-time art collaborator Storm Thorgerson, Syd’s famous photo-biographer Mick Rock, internationally renowned stage craftsman Stephen Pyle, actor and author Matthew Scurfield and Syd’s close friend David Gale.

Beat poet and author William Pryor, film director Nigel Lesmoir-Gordon and film maker and internationally renowned glass artist Anthony Stern will also be involved. The City Wakes is a chance for the City of Cambridge, and Syd Barrett fans from all over the world to pay tribute to a very special talent.

Quotes

Syd’s sister Rosemary Breen said:

“I am thrilled to be involved in this project. Syd, my brother, was someone for whom creativity was as necessary as breathing. His music and painting were such an integral part of his being that without them he couldn’t function.”

Escape Artists’ Director and Producer of The City Wakes, Matthew Taylor commented:

“It's a great privilege to be involved in this project. Syd Barrett's breakthrough hits for Pink Floyd made a big impression on me when I was young. I never thought, some forty years later, that I'd be able to assist in bringing those songs to new audiences and in helping to stage an exhibition of Syd's paintings in his hometown. The fact that this is all happening in Cambridge, the city in which the Pink Floyd story began, and that so many of Syd's old friends are getting back together, through The City Wakes, to celebrate his achievements, only adds to the unique and special nature of the events.”

The City Wakes Musical Director, Simon Gunton, commented:

“Syd was an unbelievably talented musician and to be able to work with his songs is a real honour. It seems to me that one of the great things about Syd was that he never played a song quite the same way twice. It’s amazing to be able to carry on that tradition; the insight and creative input of the mental health care service users with whom I’m working has been just incredible and his given me a whole new perspective on Syd’s music.”

NEWS - David Gilmour: "não me interessa reunir o Pink Floyd"

Acabamos resolvendo colocar apenas este show no álbum."

"Sobraram muitas músicas do último disco (“On An Island”), então tenho vários pontos de partida.

Gary Graff, Detroit

David Gilmour's upcoming concert set, "Live in Gdansk," turned out a little different than the Pink Floyd guitarist planned.

"The original intention was to make a live album out of the whole tour, selecting different songs from different nights," Gilmour tells Billboard.com. "But so many of the best ones just seemed to come from that last night in Gdansk that in the end we thought, 'Oh, we'll just do the whole thing from Gdansk. "

It was certainly a momentous night, a performance at the Polish city's historic shipyards on Aug. 26, 2006. that marked the 26th anniversary of the founding of the on Solidarity (Solidarnosc) Trade Union. For that night only Gilmour and his band, who had been on the road promoting his latest solo album, "On An Island," were accompanied by a 40-piece string section from the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony conducted by Zbigniew Preisner, who had done the orchestral arrangements on the album.

Represented on five different CD and DVD packages coming out Sept. 16 via Columbia, "Live in Gdansk" also captures Gilmour reveling in a new era of his career in which he's comfortable with his Pink Floyd legacy but "finding new feet a little bit as an artist after all these years."

"It was the most satisfying and enjoyable experience in my touring life," Gilmour reports. "I think on the last solo record ('About Face') I made back in '84, I was a bit nervous about the Pink Floyd thing and wanted to stay away from it, whereas most of what the Pink Floyd thing is is a sound that I love. On ('On An Island') I finally got to a place where I felt free from any pressure either way from that whole specter."

Gilmour re-affirms that these days "the thought of going back to Pink Floyd just doesn't interest me." But he doesn't yet have solid plans for his next recording venture, either.

"I want to get ('Live in Gdansk') completely put to bed before I even worry about anything new," Gilmour explains. "I've got a lot of material left over form ('On An Island'), so ... I've got a lot of start points. That starts to get the creative juices flowing and you stary then to write new material. So it's good to have bits of music to start working on, but how many of them I will actually use and how much new stuff will come up is anyone's guess. That's in the lap of the gods."

Quatro vídeos ("The Blue", "This Heaven", "Where We Start" e "A Great Day For Freedom") podem ser vistos neste link.
